NCJW Southern Maine Section has a long history of providing assistance to immigrants, starting with serving Kosher meals to immigrants on House Island in Casco Bay. Refugees from Darfur are the latest ethnic group to seek shelter in Portland. Section members have tutored immigrants in English, hosted pot luck suppers so Jews and Muslims could mingle, and invited Darfurian survivors of genocide to share their stories. Additionally, NCJW donated solar cookers to refugee camps so that women wouldn’t have to risk assault in their quest for firewood.
